Sulong! Power Shift Pilipinas Conference

Psychology Volunteers on Bikes core member Daryl Mishka Watin attended Power Shift Pilipinas, a conference organized by 350.org and the second phase of the Global Power Shift (GPS) Movement, last March 26 to 29, 2014 at the CAFA Building, USC Talamban. About 200 youth and climate change mitigation leaders from across the country, who are participating and engaging in the climate movement’s struggle in the Philippines, attended the conference and tackled issues and concerns of communities directly impacted by climate change. The conference identified tangible local, regional, and national responses to the impacts brought by Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) as the foremost climate issue the country faces today.

One of the conference’s features included the presentation of Naderev “Yeb” Sano, Climate Change Comissioner of the Philippines, about climate change negotiations during the UN Conference of Parties as well climate change negotiations within the country.

The conference also included various plenary sessions, panel break-outs, roots camps and discussions, skills tracks sessions and trainings, and island caucuses, which further increased the participants’ awareness about climate change and highlighted many different avenues to go about with the climate change movement and with combatting climate change in the country.
